Cigarette Card Collector

Cricket

Cricket cards have always been popular. Some of the earliest cigarette cards issued in the UK were of cricketers, notably the untitled set of 50 issued in 1896 by W.D. & H.O. Wills. The scarce card of W.G. Grace from this set is shown above. The rising popularity of the cigarette card in the period 1900-1910 saw many other issuers start to produce cricket cards, both in series dedicated to cricket or as part of general interest series. A particular favourite is the general interest series issued by Ogden's Ltd with their Tabs cigarettes in 1901, shown on the right. Firms distributing cigarettes in other countries also produced series with their nationals on, for example the Australian issued "Prominent Australian and English Cricketers". The earlier cards are relatively hard to find and are highly sought after by cricket collectors and card collectors alike. Fortunately, later examples from the 1920s and 1930s are relatively easy to come by, and can be bought as complete sets.
